This time of year is supposed to be about joy and happiness, but for some people it is anything but joy and happiness. Although depression can occur at anytime of the year, November and December tend to be harder on some people. There are several reasons for this.
Social Isolation
Some people can isolate themselves this time of year either because they do not do well in social situations or because they are depressed. Unfortunately, withdrawing often makes the feelings of loneliness and symptoms of depression worse. This can also make those ask themselves “why can’t I be as happy as other people?” One of the best ways to deal with this is to reach out to others for support. Try talking to someone like a therapist.
Grieving
Some people may be thinking about a lost loved one and have increased depression. These times of the year bring back memories from the past and these memories can have a negative impact on them.
Things you can do

Dealing with Holiday Depression
Talk with your provider if you are feeling sad or depressed. They can refer you to a mental health specialist. If your feelings start to become a crisis and you start to think about suicide, do one of the following immediately!
- Call 9-1-1
- Go immediately to the nearest emergencyroom
- Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).
Alcohol and Drugs
People may reach for alcohol and drugs to cope with their depression. DO NOT DO THIS! It will make everything much worse. If you have an alcohol or drug problem go to an AA or NA meeting as soon as possible.
There are a lot of options and services in New Mexico, however a lot depends on the person to get treatment. You have to go get help which can be very difficult for those suffering with depression. We have a lot of options here at the clinic but here are a few for you to call.
